At least 75 people were burned to death and another 118 were taken to hospital after a petrol fire ignited by a cigarette butt broke out in a densely populated slum in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, Reuters reported Monday. The fire started after a fuel tank at a depot belonging to the Kenya Pipeline Company spilled fuel into an open sewer flowing through the slum. Residents of the slum tried to scoop up the fuel. But someone tossed a cigarette butt into the sewer. Local television channels aired images of smoldering skeletons as the fire raged through the slum.

China's commercial banks were more aggressive in lending in August than in July due to a temporary ease in inflation in August. China's new yuan-denominated loans reached RMB548.5b in August, up RMB9.3b year-on-year, the People's Bank of China said on its website Sunday. But experts say the government's tight monetary policy is likely to continue. Fan Gang, a former adviser to the central bank, said tightening measures can help ensure that China's economy has a soft landing. He expects China's economy to slow in the near term, but called that a "good thing" that could prevent overheating.

Dried sea cucumbers with a large amount of sugar added in their manufacturing process have reappeared in the market, as the sea cucumber market expects a sales peak in the Mid-Autumn Festival period, xinhuanet.com reported. Apart from sugar, excessive salt and gel are also used to add weight to low-quality sea cucumbers. Some of the questionable sea slugs are 4 or 5 times their original weight. Sea cucumber manufacturers have also reportedly used caustic soda to keep their products fresh for a longer time. Food additives besides edible salt are banned in manufacturing dried sea cucumbers, according to the Ministry of Health.

The BBC reported a global stock market slump as the euro fell on Monday on fears that Greece may default on its debt.

UK police arrested 4 men and one woman Sunday after the discovery of 24 men suspected of being held against their will at a Bedfordshire traveler site, the BBC reported. The 24 men, some English and some from eastern Europe, were found in "filthy and cramped" conditions, police said. They were found in sheds and horse boxes, and were taken from the site to a medical center. Detectives believe some may have been there for up to 15 years. Weapons, drugs and money were also found at the site, police said. Those arrested are suspected of committing slavery offences.

Fast-paced, fantastical TV shows such as "SpongeBob SquarePants" may harm children's ability to pay attention, solve problems and moderate behavior, according to a US study published Monday. Researchers from the University of Virginia found that the learning ability of 4-year-olds who watched 9 minutes of "SpongeBob SquarePants" was severely compromised compared to 4-year-olds who either watched the slower-paced TV show "Caillou" or spent time drawing. 'Take time by the forelock'

把握时机，机不可失，英文叫做take time by the forelock。Forelock一般指马匹的额毛，不过，"抓着时间额毛"可不是把时间比作过隙白驹。这个成语中的"时间"，其实是指西方传说里的时间老人(Old Father Time)。据说时间老人是秃头的，仅额上还有一撮头发。他一手提着象征死亡的大镰刀，一手提着象征时间流逝的滴漏向前走，从来不会停下脚步。所以，要抓住时机，一定得留意时间老人什么时候到来，一看见他就要马上抓着他额上的头发。这成语也可写作seize an occasion/an opportunity by the forelock。请看例句:
