Britain's cost-cutting government plans to sell off some of its stock of fine wines to pay for cheaper bottles that will be offered to visiting dignitaries, Reuters reported. The move would save taxpayers nearly £500,000 by 2015, the foreign office said. The wine in the cellar, located in the basement of the Lancaster House mansion in central London, has an estimated value of about £2m. The savings are a mere drop in the ocean when compared with spending cuts of £81b over the next 4 years.

China's environmental regulators will spend RMB150m this year on nuclear and radiation safety supervision and control, as well as in offering technical support, in an effort to ensure nuclear safety, Xinhua reported. The Ministry of Environmental Protection said in a budget report for 2011 that the ministry's total expenditure is about RMB1.92b this year. The ministry's budget report last year did not include nuclear safety projects.

China opposes the European Union's decision to impose its first-ever anti-subsidy and anti-dumping duties on Chinese coated fine paper, said Ministry of Commerce spokesman Yao Jian Saturday, Xinhua reported. The EU has violated World Trade Organization rules by imposing both anti-subsidy and anti-dumping trade levies on the same goods, he said. China will carefully study and evaluate the final ruling and reserve the right to take legal action accordingly to protect the interests of Chinese enterprises, Yao said.

福岛核电站一员工死亡
A man in his 60s died on his 2nd day of work at the Fukushima No 1 nuclear plant Saturday, becoming the first person to die at the plant since the March 11 quake and tsunami damaged the facility, AP reported. The worker was carrying equipment at the plant's waste disposal building when he collapsed and died later in the hospital, said a spokesman for Tokyo Electric Power Co. Harmful levels of radiation were not detected in his body. Cause of death was unknown.

Classical music megastar Lang Lang was given an honorary doctorate in music by Prince Charles at a ceremony in London, AP reported. The 28-year-old musician was the youngest and the only Chinese individual to be distinguished with the honor. The Chinese virtuoso pianist was one of several artists honored at the Royal College of Music by the prince, who also bestowed doctorates upon composer James MacMillan and conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen.

A flight came into Heathrow as a jagged bolt of lightning smashed into the roof, right above the pilots' heads, the Daily Mail of London reported. The powerful jolt of electricity passed right through the body of the Airbus A380 before shooting out to continue its journey to the ground. Amazingly, the airplane landed safely minutes later, with not even a scratch and its 500 passengers and crew unscathed. This incredible image was captured last month by photographer Chris Dawson in southwest London. "Planes get hit by lightning several times a year," said David Learmount, editor of the website Flightglobal. "They act as a conductor. Getting a good strike like this can look very dramatic, but it might not make any impact."(See photo)
