Sony CEO Howard Stringer faced harsh criticism of his leadership after the consumer electronics conglomerate revealed hackers may have stolen the data of another 25m accounts in a 2nd massive security breach, Reuters reported Tuesday. The Japanese electronics company said its Sony Online Entertainment PC games network had been hacked on April 18, but did not find out about the breach until the early hours of Monday and shut down the service shortly afterwards. The breach may also have led to the theft of 10,700 direct debit records from customers in Austria, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain and 12,700 non-US credit or debit card numbers, it said.

Investors said Sony and chief executive Stringer had botched the data security crisis. "The way Sony handled the whole thing goes to show that it lacks the ability to manage crises," said Michael On, a fund manager at Beyond Asset Management in Taipei. "The current CEO should step down after the hacker problems."

The overall economy development trend of China's manufacturing industry rose but manufacturing growth slowed, the National Bureau of Statistics said Tuesday in an analysis. The Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) of the manufacturing sector was 52.9% in April, down 0.5 percentage points month-on-month.
国家统计局3日发布分析报告称，中国制造业经济总体处于增长态势，但增速有所放缓。数据显示，4月份中国制造业采购经理指数为52.9%，环比回落0.5个百分点。--50% is the cut-off point for the economy. A PMI reading above 50% indicates that the manufacturing economy is generally expanding; below 50% indicates that it is generally declining.

A senior Chinese leader has proposed setting up a dynamic national population information database covering each of the country's citizens in order to enhance social administration. Zhou Yongkang, secretary of the Central Political and Legislative Affairs Committee of the CPC, said the population management system which was set up in the planned economy period based on household registration and ration cards is out of date. The new database will be based solely on each citizen's ID card number, he said. Zhou made the proposal in a signed article in the latest issue of Qiushi magazine.

Obama administration officials said Monday they would probe whether Pakistani authorities helped al Qaida leader Osama bin Laden stay in hiding for years, the Wall Street Journal reported. Emerging details of the US raid immediately raised questions about how bin Laden had eluded a manhunt that dates back more than a decade. The al Qaida leader was cornered not in a remote border hideout but in a 3-story mansion complex in Abbottabad, a city roughly 40 miles north of Islamabad that is thick with active and retired Pakistani military personnel. "At best, the Pakistanis look totally incompetent," said a Pakistan expert at Georgetown University. "At worst, they look completely complicit."

Pakistani officials are adamant they didn't know of the terror leader's presence. An official from Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate (ISI) said the ISI also had provided intelligence related to couriers who worked for bin Laden and eventually led the US to his compound. Still, the ISI official acknowledged that Pakistanis are embarrassed by the raid. "It's unfortunate, but we did not know about the people resident in that compound," said the official.

Google Inc's Seoul office was raided Tuesday on suspicion that the Internet search firm's mobile advertising unit AdMob had illegally collected data, South Korean police said, Reuters reported. "We suspect AdMob collected personal location information without consent or approval from the Korean Communication Commission," a South Korean police official said. Google has already been the subject of a series of probes in South Korea and the US over data collected by its controversial fleet of "Street View" cars since last year.

The age group that saw the fastest growth in social network use between 2008 and 2010 was the 55 to 64 crowd, according to a new survey from Pew Research, Newsweek reported. Two years ago, just 9% of this demographic said they used social networks, but by 2010, that amount had skyrocketed to 43%.

A university lecturer was stabbed to death in his home in Northampton alongside his wife and 2 daughters, the Daily Telegraph of London reported. Ding was a senior lecturer in the Division of Chemical and Environmental Science at Manchester Metropolitan University. Detectives said the motive was not clear but it did not appear to be burglary or robbery and added that there was no risk to the wider public.
