While Coca-Cola still has the biggest share of China's $49b soft drinks market, pride of place on a large display is given over to fast-growing local brews, including Wahaha's vitamin-packed smoothies, Nongfu Spring's exotic fruit blends, Wang Lao Ji's herbal teas and scores of others like them, the Financial Times of London reported. "The local guys are innovating more and the foreign guys are having to play catch-up," says Ted Hurley, associate director of fast-moving consumer goods at Nielsen, the information and analytics company. Analysts attribute the success of these brands to several factors. They say they have a stronger handle on consumer trends – several of these are global including healthier diets and a desire for novelty.

陕启动240万人移民工程
Shaanxi has launched a huge migration project involving 2.4m people in Shannan region, far outstripping the scale of the Three Gorges Dam migration that relocated 1.5m, China News Service reported. Shannan, or southern Shaanxi, is a mountainous region, which is frequently hit by natural disasters. The migration project is to safeguard the lives and properties of people living in a thorough way in Shannan, and it is hoped the move can also improve their production and living conditions, vice governor Jiang Zelin said. The move is set to be completed in 10 years.

国内车市首现负增长
The domestic auto market saw the first negative growth in 27 months in April, the latest data released Tuesday by China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) shows, xinhuanet.com reported. The growth of the domestic auto market has seen a sharp fall this year due to a multitude of factors such as the withdrawal of preferential policies, rising oil prices and the Japanese earthquake. The production and sales of home-made cars in April dropped 15.98% and 15.12% respectively month-on-month. CAAM estimates that production and sales growth of home-made cars this year may be lower than expected.

Japan is evaluating options to rebuild the areas hit by a deadly earthquake and tsunami on March 11 through property securitizations and public-private partnerships, business daily Nikkei reported. The government plans to buy properties in urban shopping districts which can be changed into commercial facilities and also higher ground areas on which residential properties can be built. Private financing may be sought to build infrastructure, said the report.

The new government proposals could allow some British students to take up the extra places if they pay the same high fees as overseas undergraduates. Such candidates would not be eligible for student loans. The proposals are likely to be criticized as a means for the wealthiest to "buy degrees."

It is claimed that England football chiefs hired a team of spies to snoop on rival bidders for the 2018 World Cup, the Daily Mirror of London revealed. Undercover agents were paid by the FA to infiltrate Zurich hotels where FIFA committee members and many bid delegations were staying last December and report what they learned. However, the plan backfired as Russia was awarded the 2018 World Cup host. The FA refused to comment officially on the claims from 2 unnamed officials close to the bidding process. A bid insider said that all England's rivals were using private-intelligence agencies in the final days of the campaign, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Embarrassing photographs of Pippa Middleton and her brother James have been withdrawn after anger over their "betrayal" by friends, the Daily Telegraph of London reported. The Duchess of Cambridge's family has taken action after embarrassing photographs of James and Pippa in various states of undress appeared on the Internet in America. The family believes that the pictures, which are understood to have been taken by friends of the pair, were sold for substantial sums to photographic agencies.
