Nearly 20 "illegal" infants and young children were forcibly taken away from their parents by the family planning departments in Shaoyang, Hunan, before they were adopted by foreign families, New Century Weekly reported Monday. For years, the authorities have been hauling away children who are allegedly born out of wedlock, above the birth quota, or adopted under "unlawful procedures." With their parents unable to afford a "social fostering fee," these children were sent to a local charity house where they were declared "abandoned" and given a new surname, "Shao", after the city. Most of the "Shao-surnamed" kids ended up adopted by families from the US, the Netherlands and Spain, who each paid $3,000 for the adoption, said the charity house.
【Top News】
>MA60 crashes in Indonesia
A Chinese-made Modern Ark 60 (MA60) plane carrying 27 people plunged into the ocean Saturday before landing in Kaimana in Indonesia's West Papua, the China Business News reported Monday. The flight is operated by Merpati Nusantara Airlines. The chief of the National Search and Rescue Agency said the crash was probably caused by bad weather. Bambang Ervan, a spokesman for the transportation ministry, said it was unlikely that anyone survived. It's the first major crash involving an MA60 plane. Insiders said that if the cause of the incident isn't revealed quickly, the accident may affect the sales of Chinese-made planes.
MA60 planes are made by Xi'an Aircraft Industrial Corporation under the China Aviation Industry Corporation. They have a seating capacity of 50-60 passengers. Their price is 2/3 that of a similar foreign-made plane and their usage cost is 10-20% lower. The MA series planes have been exported to 13 countries.
>Unbearable tolls blamed
Vegetable prices are a much debated economic problem and a paradox is at the heart of the issue. Farmers moan over the bargain deals they give wholesalers, but consumers complain about the rocketing prices when the vegetables hit supermarket shelves. But an important factor explaining the high prices has emerged: the transport cost – which experts estimate makes up 50%-70% of the total cost, the Yangcheng Evening News reported. Big bucks have flown into the listed toll collection businesses, with the industry's huge profit chain now recognized. Toll collectors overtook real estate developers, which have traditionally been blamed for stealing social wealth, in terms of corporate profits in 2010, said a new study by the newspaper.
>Japan to shut nuclear plant
Chubu Electric Power Co, Japan's 3rd-biggest power operator, Monday agreed to shut its Hamaoka nuclear plant, which is 200 km southwest of Tokyo and considered one of the quake-prone country's most at risk, Reuters reported. The move followed unusually overt pressure from Prime Minister Naoto Kan, which signals a potential shift in energy policy after Japan's nuclear crisis triggered by the giant tsunami and earthquake.
Another nuclear power operator - Japan Atomic Power – said it had plugged a tiny radiation leak at its Tsuruga plant on the west coast – the 1st since it started operations in 1987. It said the leak had no impact on the environment.
>NATO left refugees to starve
Dozens of African migrants were left to die in the Mediterranean after a number of European and NATO military units apparently ignored their cries for help, the Guardian of London has learned. A boat carrying 72 passengers, including several women, young children and political refugees, ran into trouble in late March after leaving Tripoli for the Italian island of Lampedusa. Despite alarms being raised with the Italian coastguard and the boat making contact with a military helicopter and a NATO warship, no rescue effort was attempted. All but 11 of those on board died from thirst and hunger after their vessel was left to drift in open waters for 16 days.
International maritime law compels all vessels, including military units, to answer distress calls from nearby boats and to offer help where possible. Refugee rights campaigners have demanded an investigation into the deaths.
>Recovery of Air France bodies
French authorities are attempting to recover 50 bodies lying with the wreckage of an Air France jet 12,800 feet deep under the Atlantic Ocean, nearly 2 years after the jet disappeared and all 228 people aboard were killed, USA Today reported. After 2 "black box" recorders from Air France Flight 447 were retrieved last week, crews working with robot submarines have plucked 2 remains from the depths. It has, however, caused controversy among families of the dead, who are split over whether to leave the victims in their watery grave or to bury them on land.
>Apple most valuable brand

>Jobs is revealed as dictator
Fortune's latest cover story dives behind the scenes at Apple for a look at how it works with Steve Jobs's hands-on managerial style.
The article tells how Jobs was livid after the 2008 debut of cloud-based storage service MobileMe, which was poorly received due to its bad performance. Jobs reportedly rebuked the executive team responsible for MobileMe and told them their dud product was "tarnishing Apple's reputation." "Can anyone tell me what MobileMe is supposed to do?" he asked after he assembled the entire team. When someone offered an adequate answer, Mr Jobs allegedly snapped: "So why the f*** doesn't it DO that?"
Failure, it would appear, is unacceptable. Mr Jobs is not someone you want to disappoint.
The article paints Mr Jobs as something of a dictator – involved in every decision, right down to the design of shuttle buses ferrying employees to work and the food that is to be served in the cafeteria.
【Talk Show】
