A chemical spill of carbolic acid in the Xin'an River, a major source of drinking water for Zhejiang, has led 5 water utility companies to stop drawing water from the river. Water supplies for at least 552,200 people near Hangzhou have been affected. Some supermarkets in Hangzhou Monday are reported to have sold out of bottled drinking water as local residents are scrambling to buy, according to zjol.com. The Hangzhou city government has called on citizens to store water for daily use, although supplies of drinking water in downtown Hangzhou have not yet been contaminated.

Today is the first day of the annual National College Entrance Exam, or "gaokao." The ChinaDaily Mobile Newspaper editors advise test-takers not use Internet buzzwords in their Chinese essays. Words like "geilivable" (cool), "shenma" (everything) and "fuyun" (floating clouds, or nothing serious) are popular because they bear personal touch and can easily spark impulse for innovation. Society should give tolerance, allowing the existence of the fad. The "gaokao" essay, however, is a serious exam on language, evaluating examinees' literal competence and outlook for the world rather than the ability to employ buzzwords.

The use of ultra-thin plastic bags in street markets in China remains rampant despite the country banning their use 3 years ago. A CCTV probe revealed some factories make the plastic bags from recycled materials to save cost. It can't be guaranteed that the bags come from a safe source, some of which may come from medical waste, an expert said. The use of such plastic bags may contaminate the food inside of it, posing a potential risk for our health, the expert added.

Piracy websites cause RMB4-6b of economic loss each year to the online literature industry, China Comment reported. The rampant hacking against China's network literature has grown into an illegal industry chain, which steals updated contents from literature websites and gains heavy traffic to their piracy websites with the aid of search engines, said Zhang Kangkang, vice chairman of China Writers Association. They form an alliance with advertisers and make a profit from ads. In the end, search engines, advertisers and piracy websites divide the profits.

The most buzzworthy was the iCloud, which is designed to rival Google. The highly anticipated iPhone5 was not unveiled. Apple's share price fell 1.57% on the Nasdaq stock market. The stock traditionally gains before a major event before dipping on the day it happens.

However, the 47-year-old Australian was later accused of refusing to follow its customs, spending too much time on self-promotion, and refusing to show respect to her elders.
