The number of cars in China surpassed 100m at the end of August, according to data from the Traffic Management Bureau of the Ministry of Public Security. The number is 2nd only to the US, which stands at 285m. Private buyers make up the majority of of China's car consumers, contributing most to the soaring car ownership figure. According to international standards, a country becomes a car society when 20% of its families own a car. Now that around 6% of Chinese people own a car, the nation is catching up to the international stardands, meaning China is entering the car society, the bureau said.

An 8-seater kindergarten bus overloaded with 64 kids and a teacher was intercepted by traffic police in Qian'an, Hebei province recently, Yangcheng Evening News reported. A video recording of the severely overloaded bus has been uploaded to the Internet. It shows scores of 4-5 year-old kids stuffed almost face-to-face in the bus, with some finding it difficult to breathe. In order to load more people, the driver removed all the seats from the bus and replaced them with rows of benches.

A wind farm in the UK has been paid ￡1.2m to not produce electricity for 8-and-a-half hours a day, The Daily Telegraph of London reported. The amount is 10 times greater than the sum the wind farm's owners would have received had they actually generated any electricity. The ￡1.2m compensation payment goes to a Norwegian company that owns 60 turbines in the Scottish Borders. The National Grid asked the company to shut down its wind farm last week amid fears the electricity network would become overloaded. The problem was caused by high winds buffeting the country in the wake of Hurricane Katia.

Las Vegas received the top spot on a list of "most miserable cities" in the US, according to data from the Brookings Institute, local media reported. A comparison of economic data from the nation's 100 largest cities, including unemployment rate, gross metropolitan product and housing prices, lifted Las Vegas to No 1 on the list. Las Vegas employment is down 13.4% and the city's gross metropolitan product is down 12.8% when measured from its peak through the 2nd quarter of this year. Coming in at No 2 and 3 on the "miserable" list were Riverside, California, and Sacramento.

The body of a man suspected to be the missing Hokkaido Railway Co President Naotoshi Nakajima was found Sunday morning off Otaru, Hokkaido, the Mainichi Daily News reported. Nakajima was reported missing on Sep 12, having left a pile of suicide notes. The police later found his car and a shoe near a beach on the outskirts of Sapporo.

Police are trying to find out who has been attempting to suck women's toes in the US state of Arkansas, AP reported. An elderly woman told police that a man approached her while she was sitting outside her apartment and put her toes in his mouth. Another woman said a man asked to suck her toes in a discount store. A 3rd woman reported something similar in a pet store. It's not clear if the same man is behind the incidents.
