Poyang Lake could look like a flood zone at some point this month, but for now it is a mere puddle, New Express reported. As China's largest freshwater lake, Poyang's water area can reach to over 4,000 sq km in high flow years. But the lake shrunk due to a persistent draught, causing the center area to turn into a "grassland". Herds of bulls have taken a liking to the area. When a breeze blows, they can be seen enjoying a meal of green lake grass.

The lake dried due to the abnormal shortage of rainfall and weak flow from the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. That's according to Dai Nianhua, the deputy director of Poyang Lake Research Center with Jiangxi's Science Academy. Disorganized and unregulated sand excavation in the lake and the dams on Jiangxi's 5 major rivers which control Poyang Lake's inflow also played a part.

April data released by the People's Bank of China shows that banks saw newly added deposits hit RMB337.7b. And household savings dropped RMB467.8b from the same time a year ago, Xinhua reported. The decline of that RMB467.8b mainly found its way to 3 sectors: banks' financial products, private lending and the property market. Experts said banks have become less attractive places for people to save their money. The drop in savings is said to reflect a desire to secure or increase people's assets value.

儿童玩具被指两套标准
A recent environmental protection study shows many plastic kids' toys on domestic markets contain potentially harmful phthalates, Nanfang Daily reported. The EU, the US and Southeast Asian countries have banned producing and selling of toys containing phthalates. Reporters also found that many toys contain heavy metals that meet China's standards but fail EU standards. Industry insiders said China's companies make toys with 2 sets of standards. Toys for export are created with nontoxic and harmless materials, while low-cost paint and materials with hidden troubles are used on toys for domestic markets.

清华真维斯牌神秘消失
The No 4 building at Tsinghua University was renamed "Jeanswest Building" after a brand-name clothing company. But the sign which was set to introduce the Jeanswest brand mysteriously disappeared Thursday morning, the Beijing Morning Post reported. Tsinghua's Publicity Department said it is looking into the case, but it's still not clear on the sign's whereabouts. Jeanswest is waiting for the official result of Tsinghua's investigation. The company has not announced if it will have a new sign made for the building. Some Tsinghua students said the Jeanswest sign may have disappeared because someone had drawn graffiti on it, the Beijing News reported. The characters reading "Jeanswest Building" have not been removed from the front of the building.

Amazon launched its Mac Download Store Thursday, PC Magazine reported. This new online venue offers a variety of software and games for Mac computers. The store is said to directly challenge Apple's own Mac store. Amazon's offerings undercut Apple's products with lower prices, and so far Apple has had no response to Amazon's bold move.

A winged water bird's unusual appearance caused much amusement among onlookers, who said his ruffled head feathers made him look like a member of the Beatles, the Daily Mail of London reported Thursday. The image was captured on camera by photographer Rob Palmer in northeast Colorado in the US. Palmer explained the bird had ended up with the bizarre mop-top hairdo after flaring up its feathers for a territorial fight.(See photo)
