64th Cannes Film Festival participants watched the festival's only Chinese-language entry early Saturday. Wu Xia (Dragon), a martial arts film directed by Peter Ho-Sun Chan, premiered at a Midnight Screening. Chan joined Dragon stars Takeshi Kaneshiro, Donnie Yen and Tang Wei (see cover) at the premiere. The audience gave the movie 3 standing ovations when it ended shortly after 3 am. One of the ovations lasted 3 minutes.

The Weinstein Company has acquired world distribution rights for the Chinese-language film Wu Xia outside of Asia and France. Weinstein boss Harvey Weinstein said Wu Xia combines 2 of his favorite genres: film noir and martial arts.

The Palace Museum, already embarrassed after thieves stole relics on display, has attracted new criticism from netizens. After the thieves were caught and the relics returned to the museum, the museum sent a Banner of Gratitude (see photo) to local police. Unfortunately, a wrong character was used as one of the 10 characters expressing thanks, sparking online jeers from netizens.

The Banner of Gratitude should have read "Protect the motherland and make it powerful and prosperous." But instead of using the characters for "protect," characters for "shake or move" were used. As a result, the wrongly worded banner appeared to accuse the police of not protecting China.

农夫山泉众瓶装水涨价
Bottled water brands such as C'estbon and Nongfu Spring told stores in Guangzhou to increase their product price by about 10%, the Guangzhou Daily reported. Some barreled water brands also announced a 10% price increase. The price hike was affected by surging oil prices, which almost doubled the cost of the plastic bottles, the newspaper reported.

巴国情报局长引咎辞职
Pakistan's intelligence chief told Pakistan's lawmakers that the US used stealth technology on its helicopters that could not be detected by radar when US troops raided a compound and killed Osama bin Laden, Xinhua reported Saturday. Pakistan's intelligence agencies had been under fire for their failure to detect the US army helicopters. Inter-Services Intelligence Chief Ahmad Shuja Pasha offered his resignation after he briefed lawmakers about the US operation.

A stash of pornography was found in the hideout of Osama bin Laden by the US commandos who killed him, US officials said Friday. The report added a discordant note to the public image of the Islamist militant who had long denounced the West for its allegedly lax sexual attitudes, Reuters reported. The pornography recovered in bin Laden's compound in Pakistan, consists of electronically recorded videos, and the collection is fairly extensive. The officials said they did not know if bin Laden himself had acquired or viewed the materials.
