Chinese travel agencies have resumed organizing tourist groups to visit Japan, xinhuanet.com reported. A Chinese group of 180 tourists will depart on June 2 for Kagawa, Osaka, and Kobe in Japan's Kansai areas. It is one of the first large Chinese tourist groups that will visit Japan after a massive earthquake and tsunami hit the country on March 11. The 4-day, 3-night travel package has sold out at a low price of RMB2,899. In the 2 months after the quake, Chinese tourists have almost excluded Japan as a travel destination over safety concerns which were also heated by National Tourism Administration's continuous warnings about potential dangers.

Drunk driving incidents in China have fallen sharply over the past 2 weeks after an amended criminal law which imposes harsher punishments for drunk drivers took effect on May 1, Xinhua reported. Between May 1 and 15, police around China reported 2,038 cases of driving under the influence (DUI), a 35% drop year-on-year, and the daily average incident number was 43% fewer than the daily number last year, said a statement issued by the traffic management authority of the Ministry of Public Security Tuesday. Moreover, the death toll and injuries caused by DUI dropped by 37.8% and 11.1%, respectively, the statement said.

UK's Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has announced options for replacing the House of Lords with a mainly elected upper chamber, BBC reported. There are currently 830 active peers sitting in the unelected House of Lords, swamping the 650 members of parliament in the elected lower house, the House of Commons. Clegg and Prime Minister David Cameron want to slash the House of Lords number to 300. The new plan would make the chamber consist of 100% elected members, or 80% elected and 20% appointed. Clegg said the plans would give Parliament "greater democratic legitimacy".

In a statement, Cameron said existing members of the Lords had served "with distinction" but change is needed. "In a modern democracy it is important that those who make the laws of the land should be elected by those to whom those laws apply.
