A local Chinese court Friday rejected an appeal to the death sentence. The appeal was filed by a music student who stabbed a cafe waitress to death to cover up a hit-and-run, Xinhua reported. The Higher People's Court of Shaanxi announced the decision to uphold the death sentence of Yao Jiaxin after a brief adjournment of Friday morning's hearing. Yao, 21, a student at the Xi'an Conservatory of Music, was convicted of murdering Zhang Miao, mother of a 2-year-old child, last October in Xi'an to prevent her from reporting to police that she was hit by his car.

奥巴马宣布美'中东新政'
US President Barack Obama on Thursday backed a key Palestinian demand about the borders of a future state with Israel. Obama's support is part of his vision for a peace deal in the Middle East, Reuters reported. Obama's proposal calls for a negotiated Israeli pullback to 1967 borders that existed before Israel occupied the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The policy shift drew a swift rejection from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the eve of his Washington visit.(See photo)

China's wine, long derided by foreign drinkers, has taken one tiny step toward respectability, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday. At the Decanter World Wine Awards in London, a red Bordeaux-style blend called Jia Bei Lan, from the winery He Lan Qing Xue in Ningxia, won the trophy for "Red Middle East, Far East & Asia over ￡10". The British wine magazine's annual awards are among the industry's most popular. Experts from more than 25 countries and regions judged 12,252 wines from 41 countries and regions.

A government panel is set to evaluate the mental state of victims who suffered from the crisis at Fukushima No 1 Nuclear Power Plant, and determine how to compensate the victims based on their results. The group is set to rank mental distress for evacuees on a scale of 1 to 4, based on the conditions in which they are living, Asahi Shimbun reported. They will evaluate people who are being forced to live in evacuation shelters, temporary housing, hotels and other facilities. The panel will factor in victim's living environment, convenience and how far their privacy is maintained.

扎克伯格欲年内再访华
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is planning to make his 2nd visit to China, Reuters reported Thursday. The world's No 1 social networking company is looking for the best way to expand into the country which is home to the world's largest Internet market by users. "Our company mission is really clear, which is we want to connect the whole world," Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg said at the Reuters Global Technology Summit. "And it's impossible to think about connecting the whole world right now without also connecting China." Sandberg said the timing and the agenda of the trip was undetermined, but that Zuckerberg, who is studying Chinese, would probably return this year. Zuckerberg visited China in last December and met with the heads of Chinese Internet companies including Baidu Inc, Sina Corp and Alibaba Corp.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has terminated his Hollywood comeback after admitting to fathering a love child, the Daily Telegraph of London reported. After 7 years as governor of California, the former action star had been planning to return to the big screen in several movies, including the planned blockbuster "Terminator 5." On Thursday night, he put all of his projects on indefinite hold so he could deal with the scandal. His lawyer Patrick Knapp said, "Governor Schwarzenegger is focusing on personal matters and is not willing to commit to any production schedules or timelines. We will resume discussions when Governor Schwarzenegger decides."
