'限塑令'将扩至餐馆医院
China will ban restaurants and hospitals from handing out free plastic bags, a tougher version of a 3-year-old ban that has significantly reduced waste in supermarkets, the Yangtse Evening Post reported Monday, citing an official. Li Jiajian, a commerce ministry official, made the remark just ahead of the 3rd anniversary of the ban which went into effect on June 1, 2008. It mainly targeted supermarkets, shopping malls and farmer's markets. Li didn't give a timetable for the new ban. The National Development and Reform Commission said previous restrictions have reduced more than 2/3 of bag usage in supermarkets. But cheap or even poisonous ultra-thin plastic bags are still widespread in farmer's markets.

The death toll of the Friday explosion at a Foxconn iPad factory in Chengdu has risen to 3, Xinhua reported. Six out of the 16 injured in the accident have been released from the hospital after receiving treatment; two were undergoing surgery at 12 am on Sunday. One victim died in the hospital, moving the death toll to 3. The investigation team has ruled out sabotage as a possible cause. Preliminary investigations have revealed it was a safety accident caused by combustible dust in a windpipe at a polishing workshop.

古董怀表成为拍卖新宠
A total of 150 rare and vintage pocket watches will be up for auction at Christie's in Hong Kong later this month. Hong Kong is known as the biggest export market for Swiss watches with many of the buyers from the mainland. The market for rare, vintage watches is much smaller than that for expensive, modern timepieces and has been quite slow for the past 20 years, said Christie's watch expert Sam Hines. However, in the last year the market has taken off as collectors, seeing strong prices for other collectibles, have brought some higher quality pieces to auctions, Hines added, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn believes he was the target of a Russian plot to have him fired as boss of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), French media reported. The 62-year-old, now facing charges of trying to rape a hotel maid, accused France and Russia of hatching the scheme to stop him from running for the French presidency. French socialist politician Claude Bartolone told French television news channel BFMTV, "Strauss-Kahn told me this when we spoke on the phone on April 29. He said the Russians and notably Putin had allied themselves with France to try to have him fired from the IMF; to stop him running for the presidency. He said that by not leaving the IMF 'cleanly' he would no longer be able to announce his candidacy." Bartolone added, "When I heard of his arrest, I recalled this conversation and felt utterly baffled. I just can't get over what has happened to him."

France's finance minister, Christine Lagarde, has emerged as the leading contender to head the IMF after being strongly endorsed by her German and British counterparts, Reuters reported. "We support her because she's the best person for the job, but I also personally think it would be a very good thing to see the first female managing director of the IMF in its 60-year history," British finance minister George Osborne said in a statement.

Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar has been killed in Pakistan, Afghan media reported Monday. "Mullah Omar was killed on the way from Quetta to North Waziristan," TOLO television said in a news bulletin. However, it did not provide details as to how he was killed and by whom. Taliban militants fighting Afghan and NATO-led troops in Afghanistan have yet to comment. The FBI has been hunting Mullah Omar since October 2001 for sheltering Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida militants in the years prior to the September 11 attacks.

The result of a significant referendum in the Republic of Malta will decide whether marriage will be required for life on the Mediterranean island. People started voting Saturday and the result is expected to be very close, the Daily Telegraph of London reported Sunday. Critics say the referendum could open the floodgates to family break-ups and an "unhealthy" society, but most young voters and the middle class are in favor of giving it a shot. Malta is 95% Catholic and, along with the Philippines, is one of only 2 countries in the world not to allow divorce.

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi paid Mafia leaders ￡300,000 a year in protection money, a mobster has told a court, the Daily Telegraph of London reported. Giovanni Brusca, 54, said Mr Berlusconi paid to "keep things in order." The ￡300,000 a year was tied to the prime minister's business activities in Sicily. Berlusconi stopped paying on one occasion which resulted in an attack planned by the Mafia. Mr Berlusconi has always denied any involvement with the Mafia despite many claims about his association since the beginning of his business career.

An 8-year-old boy has earned his dream job by becoming a toy tester, the Daily Mail of London reported Sunday. Not only will James Childs review new toys before they go on sale, he will be paid monthly in toys and will get to suggest his own ideas for new products. James, from Luton, the UK, landed the job after winning a competition where children wrote to Japanese manufacturer Bandai to say why they should get the job. The youngster produced a poem with a series of drawings that won him the top prize.(See photo)
