Taiwan's plasticizer scandal has claimed an iconic victim - the night market, the Wall Street Journal reported. Officials quickly responded to the contaminated food and drinks, but it appears to have come too late for some shaved ice and beverage vendors at Shihlin Night Market. "Summer is the hot season for frozen treats," one shaved ice vendor told the local Apple Daily. But, he said, business is not doing well at the market which is one of the Taipei's biggest tourist attractions.

Taiwan residents are well-known for their fondness for night markets. There is something about the blend of cheap clothing, smorgasbord of delicacies and wafting scent of stinky tofu that draws the locals to pack the island's many night markets every evening.

A report released Friday shows that 2/3 of young people in China's large and medium-sized cities feel "totally stressed" due to rising housing-related expenses, the Legal Evening News reported. The report also found that 31.8% of home buyers need to spend over 50% of their monthly income on a mortgage. The ratio has gone beyond the international standard, which suggests the mortgage-income ratio should be less than 1/3.

The cash-strapped national carrier Air India was forced to ground as many as 60 flights Thursday because it is unable to pay its fuel bills, AFP reported. The flights, which represent 19% of its services, were withdrawn from domestic and international routes, many of which were scheduled to connect busy airports like London, Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. The airline is struggling to pay fuel bills worth 27b rupees (more than $600m). Oil companies refused additional credit last week, forcing Air India to fly on a pay-and-fly basis, the report said.

The US Army plans to hold desert trials next week to test off-the-shelf iPhones, Androids and tablet computers for use in war, the Wall Street Journal reported. The Army will also stress-test a variety of applications starting Monday that could allow troops to tap digital information from the front lines. The Army doesn't have a plan to give every soldier a smartphone. But Peter Chiarelli, the Army's vice chief of staff, recently said that if the devices proved themselves in testing, the service would "buy what we need for who needs it now."

In a statement published on the newspaper's website, Chapman promised to significantly increase the circulation and improve the overall content produced by the newspaper. As editor-in-chief, Chapman will be in charge of a new column, discussing major events in the venture and investment business in Russia and abroad.
