The Ministry of Public Security has cracked down on a criminal chain which processes illegal cooking oil, confirming the rumor that cooking oil has flowed to the dining table, cnr.cn reported. Chinese people consume about 22.5m tons of animal and plant oil each year, but an estimated 2-3m tons of used oil returns to the dining table. That's to say, one out of 10 meals is cooked in the waste cooking oil, said He Dongping, professor of the Food Science and Engineering School at Wuhan Polytechnic University.

CNOOC said Monday that its experts have approved plans by ConocoPhillips's (COP) China unit for depressurization and sealing at its Penglai 19-3 oil field in the Bohai Bay, the latest plan to clean up the oil spill at the field. A report from China Business News said CNOOC has apparently changed its role as a cooperator also blamed for the accident to a regulator supervising its partner. CNOOC owns 51% of the total shares of the 19-3 oil field.

Only 3% of the total number of households in Beijing - about 200,000 families - are qualified, capable and willing to purchase apartments under tightening market policies, according to a report by China Vanke Co Ltd, the country's largest property developer, Beijing Times reported Tuesday. A total of 341 firms had gone under due to the effects of the March earthquake and tsunami as of Sunday, the six-month anniversary of the disaster, nikkei.com reported the Japanese credit research agency Teikoku Databank as saying Monday. Total liabilities amounted to 612.3b yen (RMB50.2b) and 6,376 employees have been involved. "Bankruptcy is most seen in the fashion and catering industries, as the country is exercising restraint in consumption after the disaster," the agency said.
