8月CPI涨幅回落至6.2%
The consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, slowed to 6.2% in August on a year-on-year basis, according to statistics released Friday by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The CPI surged to 6.5% in July. The NBS said food prices rose 13.4% in August, with pork prices rising 45.5% and the egg price by 16.3%.

Shanghai has lowered its entry barrier to attract more talent, the Oriental Morning Post reported. The educational requirements to apply for a Shanghai residence permit have been eased from bachelor degree to technical college degree for urgently-needed talent. A total of 2,476 non-local talent have gained Shanghai hukou since the end of 2010.

US officials have received "credible but unconfirmed" intelligence that Al Qaida is planning to use a car bomb to target bridges or tunnels in New York City or Washington to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the Sept 11 attacks, AP reported. The intelligence has been under investigation since it was received late Wednesday night. One official told The New York Times that at least 3 suspects, one of them a US citizen, left Afghanistan and entered the US by air last month. President Barack Obama Thursday ordered a redoubling of US counter-terrorism efforts in the face of the threat.

A new target is ripe for hacking: your car, a study released by security software provider McAfee revealed, according to nydailynews.com. The same technology that makes operating a car almost like playing a video game - such as systems that allow for remote starting or for doors to be unlocked with the push of a cell phone button - also puts your auto at greater risk of being hacked, the report says. By tapping into the systems, malicious techies can track a car's location and steal control of the vehicle - theoretically taking the driver's safety out of his hands, the report says.

A rare supernova exploding 21m light years away has become so bright it is visible from Earth with just a pair of binoculars, The Daily Telegraph of London reported. The supernova, named PTF-11kly, is predicted to reach its brightest between Sept 9 and 12, and will be the brightest since 1954. It will appear blueish-white, just above and to the left of the last 2 stars in the Big Dipper. Watchers are advised to stay away from street lights for maximum visibility.

Dr Marc Faber, also known as Dr Doom for his pessimistic outlook on the US, European and Western economies, notes that the world's economic situation today is worse than it was in 2008, the Wall Street Journal reported. He offers 5 bits of advice to preserve wealth, which we would like to share with our readers:

1.Avoid US Treasuries. "It's a suicidal investment to own 10-year or 30-year US Treasuries" and the "US government bonds are junk bonds," Faber said.

2.US Cash is trash. Despite occasional rallies, the US dollar is in trouble and holding US dollars is both dangerous and a sure way of losing purchasing power, money value and wealth.

A British grandmother, wanting to make sure that her living will was followed, has had the words "Do Not Resuscitate" tattooed over her heart. And in case Joy Tomkins were to collapse forward and medics only have a chance to look at her back, Tomkins had an additional tattoo inked on her upper right shoulder reading "P.T.O." for Please Turn Over. "People who are brought back, lots of them just don't know what's going on. They lie there with their eyes open but don't recognize the people around them, and I don't want to put my children through that," the 81-year-old said.
