Some top Chinese universities have signaled a reduction in the size of their freshman classes despite easier access to college admission in general, the China Youth Daily reported. China's best universities reiterate on developing elite education. Fudan University in Shanghai plans to admit 2,840 high school graduates in 2011, which is 100 less than 2010. Many universities have also announced a downsize in graduate school after a boom in the last few years.

A subway train on line 5 traveled Tuesday morning with one of its doors open, only being covered by a temporary curtain, the Beijing News reported. When the train arrived at the Huixinxijie Nankou Station, a glitch occurred to one of its doors, causing a failure to close. Subway staff dealt with the problem by hanging a curtain at the open door and sending a person to keep passengers off. The train continued its route after security measures had been taken. Some passengers who were forcing their way into the train had broken the door, according to the subway company.

欧大肠杆菌疫情扩至美
A 2-year-old girl who died over the weekend had been infected with E.coli, sparking fears of a Germany-style outbreak in America, US media reported. The child, from Dryden, Virginia, was taken to the hospital with bloody diarrhea but died soon after. The lethal strain appears to have spread throughout the South. Tests have revealed the girl died after exposure to E.coli from a contaminated pool. Her brother was also reportedly taken to hospital with similar symptoms.

Britain's government outlined a revised strategy Tuesday to tackle homegrown terrorism, saying tens of millions of pounds spent on anti-extremism projects have failed to steer young Muslims away from violence, AP reported. The new approach comes after a review of Britain's anti-extremism policy, which was launched following the July 7, 2005, terrorist attacks on London's transport networks. An official said the government will spend more time on actively identifying extremist threats - naming prisons, universities and the health care system as possible areas of focus - to target individuals and areas most at risk of radicalization.

An Indian website called "I Paid a Bribe" is using people to fight against corruption in the country, BBC reported. It invites people to share their experiences of bribery, what a bribe was for, where it took place and how much was involved. "Uncover the market price of corruption," proclaims the banner on its homepage. The website was founded by Ramesh and Swati Ramanathan. Having lived in the US and the UK for several years, they were dismayed upon their return to see how widespread corruption had become and decided to do something about it. "We need to find out what exactly is this corruption? What's the size of it?" Swati Ramanathan said.
