Basketball star Yao Ming officially announced his retirement in his hometown of Shanghai Wednesday, concluding a trailblazing career that promoted the game globally and connected people across the Pacific Ocean.

"Today, I announce a personal decision. I end my career as a basketball player and officially retire," Yao said at a press conference, accompanied by his parents, wife and daughter.
"I had to leave the court when I suffered a stress fracture in my left foot for the third time at the end of last year. The past six months have been an agonizing wait. I have been thinking about it over and over," the 2.26-meter center said.
The Very Last Moment that Yao Ming Fighted in NBA
Due to foot injuries, Yao played only five games for the Houston Rockets in the past two seasons of the US National Basketball Association (NBA).
Yao was selected by the Rockets as the first overall pick in the 2002 NBA draft. He averaged 19 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.9 blocks in his ensuing nine-year career.
In a video message prepared for Yao's retirement, NBA Commissioner David Stern said, "Yao Ming has been a transformational player and a testament to the globalization of our game."
"His dominant play and endearing demeanor along with his extensive humanitarian efforts have made him an international fan favorite and provided an extraordinary bridge between basketball fans in the US and China," Stern said.
Daryle Morey, general manager of the Rockets who attended Wednesday's press conference, told the Global Times that Yao would remain one of the best players of all time.
Yao's cultural impact and what he brought to the Rockets would stay with the team despite his retirement, Morey said.
"Yao Ming gave the Chinese people and China a human face in the US," James Sasser, who served as US ambassador to China from 1996 to '99 and still travels to the country regularly, told the Washington Post. "He had a commonality Americans could identify with, particularly those who are interested in sports and sports fans."
Rockets owner Leslie Alexander told the Houston Chronicle newspaper that he was sad that Yao's career ended too soon.
"It's sad for him because I know he wants to play very badly. If he had been healthy and we would have won championships, he would have been even bigger. But he had the most name recognition in the world. He was a sports icon," Alexander was quoted as saying.
"It is regrettable that Yao did not win an NBA championship, for which he worked so hard every day during his nine-year career with the Rockets. But his career is still remarkable, both in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) and the NBA," Li Qiuping, Yao's former coach at the Shanghai Sharks, told the Global Times Wednesday.

The eight-time NBA All-Star also earned praise from other players.
"His contributions to the NBA cannot be overstated. He is such a huge man and on top of that, he is a phenomenal player," the Xinhua News Agency quoted Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant as saying.
"We were talking about his injuries, but when he was playing, he was dominant in the NBA," Bryant said.
Bryant, on a promotional tour in China, is just one of a growing number of NBA stars who have traveled to the East after Yao opened up the market there.
Su Xun, a basketball commentator, said that although Yao's career was not as long as those of the NBA's top centers, he made great achievements both on and off the court in a comparatively short time.
"His retirement is a great loss to Chinese sports because he was such an excellent player and an ambassador for Chinese culture and heritage," Su told the Global Times.

However, Yao promised Wednesday that he would not withdraw from the sport completely.

Yao bought the club in 2009 when it was at its lowest point, languishing at second from last in the CBA.
He also said he would continue to work with his charity organization, the Yao Foundation, to help more people.

Yao is also the goodwill ambassador of the international wildlife conservation organization WildAid, represents China's AIDS Prevention Campaign as well as the NBA's "Basketball Without Borders" and "Read to Achieve" programs.
"Yao's spirit will inspire the country in terms of sports and charity, and I hope he can carry on with his ambassadorial role to link China with the outside world," Su said.
