In the past, Chinese consumers favor foreign brands over domestic brands. While quality is the paramount attribute behind brand preference in China, wide recognition, fashionable design and environmentally friendly innovation are also important factors determining Chinese consumers' brand choice.



And these preferred foreign brands range from automobiles, consumer electronics, fashion, sports wear, jewelry, airlines, and alcoholic drinks to shopping destinations.

"In stating their brand preference, the affluent consumers of China demonstrate a high degree of sophistication; and their preference for well known foreign brands are not simply driven by the demand for status symbols as commonly assumed, but real concerns over product quality, design, and environmental considerations,” observed Dr. Yuwa Hedrick-Wong, economic advisor, Asia / Pacific, MasterCard Worldwide.


With foreign brands becoming increasingly popular in China, the number of complaints about overseas products is on the rise.

Toyota on Jan 26, 2011 announced a worldwide recall of 1.7 million vehicles because of various defects that may cause fuel leakage. China was not included in this recall. Chinese customers have been concerned that the recalls Toyota announced neglected Chinese people's concerns in one of the few markets where Toyota has seen profit growth in recent years.


Feb 23, 2011, nineteen stores of Carrefour and Wal-Mart in China were fined 9.5 million yuan (1.45 million U.S. dollars) for cheating consumers over prices.


Recently, the British retail giant Marks & Spencer aroused public concern about food it was selling that was close to its expiry date.

Zara, the Spanish clothing retailer, is another foreign-owned store that has come in for criticism. On Monday, it was accused of selling clothes at a higher price than the one displayed on the label.


"The number of complaints about foreign brands products is increasing in recent years, especially about clothes and electronic products," said Zhang Lerong, chief editor of the complaint channel at online.sh.cn, a major local Web portal.
