Some Chinese women shuttlers hard to accept skirt rule

Chinese women shuttlers still need some time to be adapted to the new skirt rule as most of them still wear shorts in the Asian Badminton Championships here.
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has introduced a new dress code, which requires all women shuttlers to wear skirts from May 1. Players may continue to wear shorts if they wish to but it has to be underneath a skirt.
Whereas at the Asian championships, one of the few tournaments after which the rule will go into effect, most Chinese women shuttlers did not see it as a chance to adjust.
"I did wear a skirt in the All-England tournament last month but it was so big that even affect my performance," complained Li Xuerui, singles champion in 2010 Asian championships, on Thursday.
"Tomboy" Yu Yang, Beijing Olympics doubles winner, was among the most unwilling to accept the new rules, aimed at to glamourise badminton like tennis.
"I don't like wearing skirts. I am not used to them. When I wear a skirt, I don't know how to play," she said.
Not all of them, however, were so against it.
All-England titlist Wang Shixian wore a black skirt in her first round victory on Wednesday.
"The new rule is effective on May 1 so I am adapting myself to it now," she said.
The 2011 Asian badminton championships slated for April 19 to 24 in Chengdu, Sichuan province of China.
