The European Union (EU) will introduce the first equal pay day on Sunday to raise awareness of gender pay gaps ahead of the International Women's Day on March 8.

European Equal Pay Day, which falls on March 5, is meant to highlight the extra number of days that women have to work in 2011 to get the amount of money earned by men in 2010.

"The European Equal Pay Day reminds us of how much work needs to be done to close the gender pay gap. Together with Member States and social partners, we will seek to significantly reduce the gender pay gap in the EU, so that one day we will no longer need an Equal Pay Day to mark the differences in earnings between men and women," said Viviane Reding, the EU's Justice Commissioner.

The European Commission pledged to take a series of measures, which include supporting non-legislative equal pay initiatives and exploring ways to improve pay transparency, to tackle the problem.

Women in the EU earn on average 17.5 percent less than men during their lifetimes. According to the latest figures, pay gap rate run as high as 30 percent in Estonia.
