Jordan said Monday the European Union plays a crucial role in placing pressure on Israel to halt unilateral measures and resume peace talks to realize the two- state solution, the state-run Petra news agency reported.

In a meeting with Stefan Fule, the EU's enlargement commissioner, Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh said developments in the region should not distract focus on efforts to move ahead with the peace process, underlining the need to resolve the Palestinian issue, which he said is the core of conflicts in the region.

Stressing the need for re-launching direct Palestinian-Israeli talks that address final status issues, he said there is a need for setting a timeframe for the resumption of these talks that should lead to the creation of an independent Palestinian state.

The EU official stressed the union's support for Jordan's efforts to attain peace and security in the Middle East.
