Overseas plant orders won by South Korean firms reached 28.3 billion U.S. dollars in the first half of 2011 due to brisk demand for marine plants, a government report showed Tuesday.

Domestic shipbuilders won 28.3 billion dollars in overseas plant orders during the January-June period, down 15.5 percent from the previous year, the Ministry of Knowledge Economy said in a statement.

The decreased was mainly attributable to a one-off factor. South Korea obtained a nuclear power plant order worth 18.6 billion dollars from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) last January.

Excluding the UAE deal, the first-half industrial plant orders from overseas jumped 90.2 percent from a year earlier, according to the ministry.

Offshore plant orders from overseas surged 151.7 percent on- year to reach 11.9 billion dollars for the first six months of the year, contributing mainly to positive results of overseas industrial plant orders by local shipbuilders.

Also responsible for the strong orders was the fact that Saudi Arabia, a traditionally big market for local plant builders, was not affected severely by the unrest in the Middle East, according to the ministry.

Meanwhile, overseas orders for oil and gas facilities came in at 6.7 billion dollars in the first half, up 162.3 percent from the previous year.
