South Korea is trying to size up the scope of potential environmental damage radioactive water dumped by Japan would do to the country, the foreign ministry said Tuesday.

Japan's Tokyo Electric Power Company announced Monday it started releasing 11,500 tons of water tainted with low-level radiation from its earthquake-damaged Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant to store highly contaminated radioactive water instead.

The water containing radiation believed to be at least 100 times higher than the legal limit will be dumped for five days, officials of the company have said.

The move raised fear over possible radioactive contamination in neighboring South Korea, where minute levels of radioactive materials have been found in the atmosphere.

Local reports said the South Korean embassy in Tokyo expressed concern over the release of contaminated water, but the foreign ministry in Seoul said it only requested to be briefed on the issue.

"Expressing concern is not the priority here," spokesman Cho Byung-je told a press briefing. "We believe experts should quickly determine whether there really is a reason to be concerned."

"Whether Japan's move violates international laws or not would be determined only after we comprehensively assess the situation," Cho added, referring to local reports that the government has begun looking at international laws and treaties possibly applicable to the issue.
