A four-term lawmaker was elected Friday the new floor leader of South Korea's ruling Grand National Party, as the mammoth party struggles to refashion itself following a recent election defeat.

Hwang Woo-yea won 90 of 157 votes in a run-off election, easily trumping rival Ahn Kyung-yul, a royalist of President Lee Myung- bak.

The victory of the lawmaker, generally viewed as neutral and reform-minded, comes after the party leadership resigned en masse to shoulder responsibility for the defeat in recent by-elections.

The 64-year-old lawmaker has pledged reforms, including changes in the practice of fielding candidates for parliamentary elections, as the party seeks to reshape itself ahead of the key parliamentary and presidential elections in 2012.
