China's submarine completes historic test dives

China's deep-diving manned submarine, the Jiaolong, has completed its five dive tests and will return to shore on Aug. 17 and Aug. 18.
The submarine conducted five dives and reached a record of nearly 5,200 meters. It also conducted a series of undersea research experiments and gained massive first-hand data and image information from the ocean floor.
The Jiaolong embarked on the mission on July 1 from the city of Jiangyin in east China's Jiangsu Province.
During the mission, the submarine conducted three dives in exploration contract E2 areas where China's Ocean Mineral Resources Research and Development Association gained approval from the International Seabed Authority for exploration. It has done a 210-minute deepwater operation and finished camera and video shooting, topography measurement and sampling.
The submarine later conducted the fourth and fifth dive in the E1 area. It took samples on microorganisms, sediments and polymetallic nodules and twice successfully placed markers on the seabed, which has further demonstrated the feasibility and stability of deep-sea exploration.
