Lenovo announced its game console “eBox” (being renamed as “iSec”) will be launched by the end of this year. It is a gesture-controlled gadget similar to Microsoft’s Kinect, that’s why we refer this as a knockoff Kinect when we spotted at the end of last year.
However, the Chinese government did not have any accusation on Lenovo, and this had raised an apparent unfairness issue. Why Lenovo has the right to go pass the ban? Does that mean the other game console makers such as Microsoft and Nintendo can sell Kinect or Wii in China? The Chinese government did not response to any of those questions yet.
Eedoo disclosed they are persuading the Chinese authority by suggesting their “iSec” is not merely a game console, it is a “home entertainment device”, can show pictures, play music, go online and has many other functions. Well, Sony Playstation3 can also used the same argument. So if Lenovo iSec can access to China by saying its game console as a “home entertainment device”, then theoretically, Sony and other company may also too.
Although Sony’s PS3 and Microsoft’s Xbox are not officially available in China, but the consoles had already sneaked into the grey market. From another aspects, the policy doesn’t seems to be effective.
Overall, only two outcomes would occur. First is the government to ban Lenovo’s iSec or second is to allow all “home entertainment device (which means the game console)”.
In addition, Chinese gamers had already dominated by PC online games. Umm….Perhaps the most difficult part of selling game consoles in China is not convincing the Chinese authority to let them pass through the regulation. Below are some footage of iSec, enjoy!
