The World Says China Will Overtake America

In the past decade, anti-Americanism grew around the world. This was in response to concerns about the unchecked global power of the U.S., when it invaded Iraq in the face of very wide international opposition. In sharp contrast, today America is seen as on its way to losing its status as the dominant global superpower.

A new Pew Global Attitudes survey released today finds that while the U.S. is better regarded around the world now than it was in the Bush years, in 15 of 22 nations surveyed most say that China either will replace or already has replaced America as the world's "leading superpower." This view is especially widespread in Western Europe, where at least six in 10 respondents in Britain, France, Germany and Spain see China eventually overtaking the U.S.

The emerging perception of China's superpower status no doubt reflects global recognition of its growing economic might, and the fact that the U.S. is increasingly seen as trailing China economically. Nowhere is this more evident than in Western Europe, where the percentage naming China as the world's "leading economic power" has increased markedly over the past two years, along with the view that it will ultimately eclipse the U.S. as global superpower.

In Britain, for example, the share saying that China is now No. 1 economically jumped to 47%, up from 34% in 2009. Over that same period, the percentage of Brits who think that China will eventually replace the U.S. as global superpower climbed to 65%, from 49%. These percentages parallel trends in Germany, Spain and France.

The Americans have just experience a economy revival under the expectation, now they are not so optimistic as they were 10 years ago. Apparently they are worrying about how US will be positioned compared with China in the world stage.

As for if China will eventually overtake the US to become the world power, US has two camps - 46 per cent say yes, 45 percent say no. And for exactly who is the world's No.1 economic country, 43 per cent believe it is China is more than those 38 per cent believe in US.

Most of those holding that China is economically overtaking US are highly alert, they think it is a bad thing. But overall, still 51 per cent Americans take the positive view towards China. The American upset are more focused on American recession rather than Chinese success.

we see this trend

This group of statistics supports a trend of favor for China.  It may not be such of an anti-American issue than a pro-China issue.  The world now sees China's rapid and sustained growth as being more reassuring.  America currently lacks these qualities, but also needs to monitor the feelings of it's own public.  Recent events have lead many in the US to feel they are poorly represented in the midst of political chaos in Washington and an uncertain future with Social Security..

4# > A < Posted  2011-7-16 09:58  Only show this user's posts It is like I always said, China's friends will be happy to see China rise and wish it would rise faster.  China's enemies will be disappointed to see China rise and wish it will never rise.  The Europeans are obviously smarter than the rest of the world.  At least they can see things clearly instead of just guessing.

China obviously has the potential to be the greatest nation on earth.  This potential has been demonstrated by all the overseas Chinese from Singapore to the US.  The ethnic Chinese are among the best educated and the richest people in America.  But the Chinese government has not done much to truly develop China's technologies or its economic potential.  So far the so-called economic miracle is nothing more than selling Chinese labor cheaply to make exports made competitive by the excessive cheapness of the yuan.  And there is a lot of resistance to change to domestic development.  Many exporters are now dominant in the Chinese government and they will not raise the yuan, or get out of the WTO, or allow foreigners to buy control of China's domestic economy.  For instance China is producing 18 million cars, but 80% of those cars are made by foreign car companies.  And the dominant clique in the Chinese government will not do anything to reduce this excessive dominance of foreigners over China's domestic economy.  And as long as China is locked into exports or the foreigners are in control of China domestic economy then China will grow slowly or even collapse back down.

In the end, China has the potential to become the greatest nation on earth.  But there is no assurance that it will reach that level if there is no big changes in the Chinese government.

Danger of Becoming A Neo Colony

You mean "Neo Colony".  China needs to work hard to grow its own "Zaibatsus " and "Chaelbos" or "Multinationals" in order to avoid becoming a neo colony.  If the U.S. and EU continue to be protectionist then Beijing should do likewise but alack, they are too spineless.  They seem always fearful of this and that, thus always having a defeatist mentality.  The previous emperors of China were often advised by such effete self interested negative "eunuchs". Is the same thing happening again in China's corridors of power?

6# > A < Posted  2011-7-16 14:21  Only show this user's posts There is really no point for China to pay so much attention to world opinion.  The opinion will change from year to year.  China needs only to ask itself what should be done for the best interest of the Chinese people.  The best interest of the Chinese people is the only thing that counts in the policies of the Chinese government.  It would be very unwise for China to sacrifice its national interests or the best interests of the Chinese people simply to win the goodwill of other countries.  For example, the worst thing the Chinese government can do is to give up the sovereignty of the S. China Sea just to win the approval of other countries.  In the end, it is not worth it.  The European countries all think it is dangerous for China to become rich and powerful.  But they still trade with China because it is in their best interest. And their feelings is really not worth a damn!
