China invited North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, who began his seventh trip there on Friday, to learn more about how reforms and a policy of opening up can lead to rapid economic development, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao told South Korean President Lee Myung-bak Sunday.
Wen was quoted as telling South Korean President Lee Myung-bak in Tokyo on May 22 that China has given Kim "the opportunity to understand China's development and use it for his country."
Previously, the Chinese government had invariably kept Kim's visits to China confidential and admitted them only after the North Korean leader left the country.

This is also already Kim’s third time visit to China within one year. Last year in May he formally visit Beijing and in August he went to Northeastern China.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il visited a development zone in eastern China on Monday, media reports said, as he pursued a secretive trip aimed at seeking answers for his nation's crippled economy.
Kim, on his third visit to China in just over a year, toured the economic development zone in Yangzhou, a small, scenic city in the eastern province of Jiangsu, where his father, Kim Il-sung, met the then-president of China, Jiang Zemin, in 1991.
He normally stays one night in each city he visits, but this time, he travelled 3,000 km for three days and two nights on his special armored train. "No matter how comfortable the train may be, a long train journey isn’t easy for a man over 70. It seems that one of the objectives of this trip is to demonstrate that he is fit."
Media say that Kim’s visit for “development lessons” based on the schedule.

Jiangsu province has prospered thanks to an export-led industrial boom created by the landmark economic reforms China began some three decades ago.
Economic links to China have become increasingly important for North Korea's survival, because of international sanctions and deteriorating ties with South Korea. In 2010, trade between China and North Korea was worth $3.5 billion, up 29.6 percent from 2009, according to Chinese customs statistics.
During the previous visit last August, Hu urged Kim to open up his country's state-directed economy.
China's leaders have repeatedly prodded Kim to open up North Korea's impoverished and state-dominated economy, something analysts say he has been reluctant to do for fear it could undermine his family dynasty's hold on power.
North Korea initiated some economic reforms in 2002 that some analysts attributed to the 2001 trip, but it later pulled back most of them, including plans to create a joint industrial zone on its border with China. No major changes happened after the 2006 trip, though Mr. Kim ventured all the way to Shenzhen, the booming factory city that borders Hong Kong in China's southeast.(Asahi Shimbun/JoongAng Daily/Reuters/WSJ/AFP/Yonhap/Chosunilbo)
