Xiong Zequan, a 57-year-old peasant with a primary school education, embedded his gratitude to the Communist Party of China (CPC) into the wall of his new house with the simple words "CPC is kind to the common people" in Qingjiang Village, Dujiangyan City of southwest China's Sichuan Province.

Xiong said what I wrote is to remind myself not to forget who built the new house for me and to remember to whom I should pay gratitude.

Xiong's new house is a two-floor building with a total area of more than 197 square meters. His previous house collapsed three years ago during the devastating Wenchuan Earthquake on May 12, 2008.

Although the old house was simple and crude, he spent all his savings to buy it and he even borrowed some money from relatives.

"I didn't pay back the money before the earthquake. Unfortunately, nothing was left after the quake. At that time, I thought I would never own a house in my lifetime," said Xiong.

However, the reconstruction work that started in quake-hit areas in December 2008 brought Xiong unexpected hope. Xiong and his family members received a total of 116,000 yuan in subsidies, including a 16,000-yuan subsidy for rebuilding houses from the government. Moreover, he got a mortgage loan of 40,000 yuan from a local rural credit cooperative. And then Xiong had enough money to build and decorate a new house.

"I never thought I can still live in such good a house in my life. All this contributed to the CPC's good policy," said Xiong Zequan. All of Xiong's family members support him to write a grateful word on the wall of their new house. They think the CPC deserves it.
