A new air route between Gimpo and Beijing is due to start operating in July after being closed for 10 years, the state-run airport operator said Tuesday.

Four airline companies from South Korea and China, including Korean Air and Air China, will begin operating a total of eight round-trip flights between Gimpo Airport near Seoul and Beijing Capital International Airport on Friday, Korea Airport Corporation said.

Flights between Gimpo and Beijing were suspended when Incheon International Airport opened in March 2001.

Korea Airport Corporation said the new flight route will become an opportunity for the two countries to enhance cultural, economic and tourist exchanges.
