Hong Kong shares slightly down on profit taking

Hong Kong stocks dipped 3.25 points, or 0.01 percent, to close at 24,281.80 on Thursday, due to declines in property shares and profit taking after the previous five-day gain.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index opened 32.77 points, or 0.13 percent higher, at 24,317.82, then traded between 24,368.76 and 24, 195.61 during the day's session. Turnover totaled 87.18 billion HK dollars (about 11.21 billion U.S. dollars).

The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index edged down 9.84 points, or 0.07 percent, to close at 13,647.79.

Two of the four sub-indices gained ground. The Finance and the Commerce and Industry sub-indices rose 0.11 percent and 0.14 percent respectively. The Properties and the Utilities lost 1.04 percent and 0.26 percent respectively.

Banking giant HSBC, which accounts for the largest weighting of the Hang Seng Index, moved up 1.51 percent to 84.30 HK dollars, and its local unit Hang Seng Bank finished down 0.79 percent to 125.60 HK dollars.

Bank of East Asia, another Hong Kong's major bank, up 0.15 percent to 33.80 HK dollars. Local bourse operator Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing fell 0.44 percent to 179.90 HK dollars.

Local developers plunged. Cheung Kong Holding, a powerful HK- based developer controlled by billionaire Li Ka-shing, lowered 2. 21 percent to 128.60 HK dollars. Hang Lung Properties moved down 1. 54 percent to 35.20 HK dollars. Sun Hung Kai Properties lost 1.01 percent to 127.30 HK dollars, while Henderson Land added 0.27 percent to 56.00 HK dollars.

Mainland-based lenders ended mixed. China Construction Bank dipped 0.8 percent at 7.46 HK dollars. ICBC, the world's largest bank by market value, went down 0.75 percent at 6.60 HK dollars. Bank of China fell 0.67 percent at 4.44 HK dollars. Bank of Communications added 0.12 percent to 8.51 HK dollars.

As for oils shares, the country's largest oil and gas producer PetroChina moved down 0.65 percent to 12.14 HK dollars. China's top refiner Sinopec added 1.5 percent, to close at 8.14 HK dollars. CNOOC, the HK-listed unit of China's National Offshore Oil Corporation, rose 1.47 percent to 20.70 HK dollars. (1 U.S. dollar equals 7.774 HK dollars).
