The results of President Hu Jintao's visit to Russia this week reflect the determination of Beijing and Moscow to take their all-round pragmatic cooperation to new heights. This will be a blessing for the development of the two countries and for world peace.

One of the important agreements they have reached is to upgrade their ties to a comprehensive, strategic and cooperative partnership, based on equality, mutual trust, mutual support, common prosperity and long-lasting friendship.

Of all the bilateral partnerships China has entered into, the one with Russia is the richest in connotation. It is one of the most dynamic among the world's big powers, and shows the vitality and promising prospects their partnership holds.

The fact that China and Russia have been able to steer their relationship through a smooth and progressive terrain in recent years has helped them build a high degree of political mutual trust. This is because they hold similar views on many international issues and espouse the principle that international relations should be handled through a multilateral platform.

During Hu's visit, the two nations vowed to strengthen coordination and cooperation within the frameworks of the United Nations, the Group of 20, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and BRICS, which also has Brazil, India and South Africa as members.

There is no doubt that together they will contribute more to world peace, security and stability, and promote multi-polarization and democratization of international relations.

The robust growth of Sino-Russian trade has played an important role in the deepening of the two neighbors' strategic partnership. They have overcome the impact of the global financial crisis on bilateral trade.

That their bilateral trade volume reached $18 billion in the first quarter and would climb to $70 billion for the whole year is proof of their growing ties.

Hu and Russian leaders have vowed to further deepen bilateral cooperation in trade and increase their trade volume to $100 billion by 2015 and $200 billion by 2020. For this, they will attach long-term and strategic importance to gearing their energy cooperation toward areas such as oil, gas, coal, nuclear energy, hydropower and renewable energy.

China and Russia also expect greater progress in mutual investment, innovation and high-tech areas, and infrastructure in border areas. And their growing cooperation and friendship will bring more benefits to peoples on both sides of the border and the world at large.

Nowadays, the world at this very moment is at a great historical crossroad! This sort of statement could be justified for the following points:

The world now stands at a critical juncture where it'd be either "subdued by or overcoming US/NATO military aggressions" in North African region, particularly against Libya, Syria, and even possibly Iran, too;

If those US-led "colonial, hegemonic, and imperialistic" NATO forces succeed anyway both in Libya and Syria, no matter how others accuse, argue or challenge their illegal, hypocritical behaviors, they'll then, without doubt, attempt to rush again into Iran as their next target for sure;

If that's going to be the case, sooner or later, then the immediate future of the world would look extremely grim, terrible and, most of all, hopeless.

Also, the Eurocentric world order or West-oriented global power relations or US-dictated, -imposed, and -forced world order will be continually imposed upon the current world affairs.

In the world of vicious US/NATO power play, China, Russia, of course, other old targets such as Cuba, DPRK, Iran, Venezuela, too, won't be left out unharmed or free from the aggressors' ongoing "soft power" strategies through so-called "Jasmine Revolutions" or any other form of "cultural indoctrinations" (i.e., being continually Americanized and/or Westernized).

Then China, Russia, and their allies should expect more from the latter's typical propaganda war in the form of media deception, control, manipulation, demonization in the name of their "democracy, freedom and human rights" chorus.

The whole world is watching with great anxiety if China, Russia, together with other responsible global powers, could be bold, fast and decisive enough to stop them from completely taking over the whole Libya, Syria and even Iran by illegal use of force.

Many believe the strategic relationship between China and Russia, together with their traditional allies in today's global power-restructuring contexts of BRICS and SCO, could eventually secure to build a genuinely new world order which is based upon the "win-win" principles of mutual respect, cooperation, co-prosperity, if (only if!) they can continue to stay, without being divided any bit, in the present course.

Many even for a second wouldn't hypothesize the other end of the case.

For that other case would surely mean the continuation of darkness. For it won't be an easily recoverable failure for, most likely, a long while.

Therefore there is only one option, the only choice for China, Russia and other BRICS and SCO nations to succeed in their strategic, long-term and historic alliances which could surely deter the US/NATO military aggressions for the sake of the whole humanity!

Sino-Russian future on economy

Leaders from China and Russia have expressed hope economic cooperation between the two countries will catch up with the pace of the expanding political relationship. China's Minister of Commerce, Chen Deming, talked about his optimism for the future of Sino-Russian business cooperation.

The irregularity of custom clearances in Russia has been a big issue affecting bilateral trade. Now the problem is likely to be solved when a brand new logistic hub called Greenwood is built up in a suburb of Moscow. Chinese business people will enjoy a one stop service for customs clearance, logistics, storage and consultations on local trade policies and laws.

Chen Deming said, "Bilateral trade and economic cooperation complement each other very strongly. Russia's economic restructuring has come later than that of China. We have to be patient, and confident that things will get better. Meanwhile we need to let them know what we have experienced. Greenwood is a good example of the consensus we have reached."

Besides the cooperation in power and energy industries, investment is expected to increase due to cooperation in the areas of high technology, recycled energy, aerospace and aviation, and nuclear power. The minister believes this will help improve investment in the next two years.

Chen Deming said, "Russia is a country with a population of more than 100 million. The development of logistics will provide business opportunities. Russia is also considering inviting China's railway authorities to join in the construction of high speed trains. Together with these projects, there may be large amounts of investment going into Russia."

The minister says his department and its counterpart in Russia, the economic development and trade ministry, will facilitate this cooperation and provide necessary investment and trade information for the business sectors of both countries.  (China Daily/Xinhua/Sunday Times)
