Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Ukrainian counterpart Viktor Yanukovich met here Saturday evening to further deepen bilateral cooperation.

"China is ready to work with Ukraine to promote bilateral cooperation and exchanges in a comprehensive and extensive way," Hu said during the meeting, adding the two countries should work hard to carry on the friendship between the two peoples from generation to generation.

Hu expressed appreciation with the Ukrainian side for viewing its relations with China as the priority in its foreign policy.

Hu said over the past nearly two decades, China-Ukrainian relations have seen healthy and smooth growth. He said the two sides have carried out fruitful cooperation in the areas of politics, trade, economy, science, technology, culture and international affairs.

Yanukovich said Hu's visit is of great significance to the government and people of Ukraine. He said this visit will add fresh impetus to the development of bilateral relations and lift the links to a new height.

During the visit, President Hu will visit to Ukraine to visit the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, the official meeting will be held in Kiev on June 20. It is planned that Kiev and Beijing during the visit of President Hu Jintao announced the transition to full-fledged strategic partnership and will plan for the development partnership.

The visit program includes a meeting of the PRC and the President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych and Prime Minister Mykola Azarov and the signing of several bilateral agreements on various aspects of trade-economic and political cooperation. The administration of President of Ukraine expects that the visit of President Hu Jintao will be an impetus for optimizing content and pragmatic content of bilateral cooperation, primarily in trade, economic, financial, investment and scientific-technical spheres.

Strategically important partner Yanukovych has repeatedly declared the development of strategic partnership with Russia, the EU (and, separately, Poland), as well as the United States. At the same time, he sees the need for strategic partnerships with leading global players in the 21st century, primarily from China. Since independence, Ukraine's Chinese vector was never a priority, although the parties are regularly exchanged visits.

During a meeting in Beijing in September last year, Yanukovych and President Hu Jintao pledged to make every effort to fill the bilateral strategic importance. In particular, Ukraine and China have decided to develop cooperation in energy, science, technology and innovation. Kiev and Beijing also pledged to strengthen then coordination on bilateral and multilateral levels in order to prevent the spread of weapons of mass destruction, to fight together against international terrorism, international organized crime.

An important component of transition to a strategic partnership between Ukraine and China would be significantly impeded if Kiev recognized the sovereignty of Taiwan. For China, this is a very sensitive issue. It is known that before we begin to actively cooperate with one or another country, Beijing has set her condition does not promote separatism of the island. But Ukraine has committed itself not to recognize the independence of Taiwan, promising to maintain a policy of "one China."

To date, Taiwan's sovereignty recognized about two dozen countries. U.S. does not officially recognize Taiwan as an independent state, maintain close contact with the island, in particular, provide him a weapon. Ukraine had not recognized the independence of Kosovo, as well as Abkhazia and South Ossetia. One of the Chinese investment on novnyh to the forthcoming Ukrainian-Chinese talks at the summit will be economic and trade cooperation and to attract Chinese investments into the Ukrainian economy, which has been hit hard after the world crisis and in need of modernization.

Yanukovych earlier expressed confidence that the next few years the size of Chinese investments into Ukraine's economy will grow at least 10 billion dollars a year. In the first half of 2010, bilateral trade amounted to $ 2.3 billion. Many Chinese investors are already involved in large-scale projects in Ukraine. In particular, the construction of high-speed railway line between Kiev and airport Borispol will be implemented with the participation of Chinese investment. Also, Kiev hopes to attract Chinese investors to build a second ring road around Kiev. (Xinhua/BBC/Russian Opinion)
