Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa will leave for Russia on Tuesday to attend the International Economic Forum to be held at the St. Petersburg, the government said Monday.

According to the president's office, Rajapaksa will have discussions with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and brief the world leaders, whom he expects to meet at the forum, on post-war development in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka has improved its bilateral cooperation with Russia during the past few years and Russia also supported Sri Lanka against terrorism and in its post-war development activities.

Officials said Rajapaksa will thank Medvedev for Russia's support for Sri Lanka after the release of the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's expert panel report on alleged war crimes during the final stages of the civil war in Sri Lanka in May 2009.

Focusing mainly on Russia's modernization, the International Economic Forum under the theme "The definitive platform on Russian and Emerging Market Economic Environments" will be held from June 16 to 18.
