China is now viewed by U.S. citizens as their most important partner in Asia, exceeding Japan for the first time since 1975, an annual survey covering some 1,200 people aged 18 or above showed Thursday.

The U.S. survey commissioned to Gallup in February and March by the Japanese Foreign Ministry also showed that China remained the most important U.S. partner in Asia in a poll of about 200 opinion leaders, after Beijing overtook Tokyo in 2010 for the first time since 1985.

Meanwhile, a record 84 percent of the general public polled regarded Japan "as a dependable ally or friend" in a survey taken from 1960, and also a record 92 percent of them said the Japan-U.S. security treaty "should be maintained," showing their continued strong confidence in the bilateral security arrangement.

Among the general public, 39 percent said China is the most important partner in Asia for the United States, compared with 31 percent who named Japan.

As for the opinion leaders in the U.S. government, academic, business, media, religion and labor sectors, 46 percent chose China as the most important Asian partner, while 28 percent selected Japan.

The Gallup research showed economic and trade relations were the most common reason for those polled -- both ordinary citizens and the opinion leaders -- to pick China as their most important Asian partner, while the most common reasons for choosing Japan were economic relations and political connection.

On the economic front, 81 percent of opinion leaders said in a multiple-choice question Japan should join a U.S.-backed free trade agreement known as the Trans-Pacific Partnership, while 83 percent sought the signing of a Japan-U.S. FTA and 89 percent called for technical cooperation on clean energy and high-speed railway system.

This question was included in the poll for the first time and posed only to the opinion leaders.

In the survey conducted almost every year since 1960, the margin of error was 3 percent for the general public and 7 percent for the opinion leaders, according to the ministry.

The ministry also conducted similar surveys in Mexico, South Africa and Austria for the first time and found out that China was their most important Asian partner except for the Latin American country.

A Foreign Ministry official said the government will heed the outcome of the opinion polls in formulating its public diplomacy and focus on differentiating the "Japan brand" from the Chinese image.
