Cedan Norbu, a 63-year-old from Rinchen Tashigang Village, Maizhokunggar County of Lhasa city, moved into his new house which was built in the Housing Project, a livelihood project implemented by the regional government of Tibet.
Sitting in a Tibetan- style sofa, Norbu told excitedly "we’ve been receiving all kinds of subsidies from the local government from birth to old age, from farming work to buying furniture."
With a family of ten, Cedan Norbu has his unique way of calculation "my house takes up a building area 201 square meters, and it cost 210,000 yuan in all. But we only have to pay 40,000 yuan, of which an interest-free loan of 20,000 from the bank, to be paid back in 2 years. The government has subsidized all the rest of 170,000 yuan. "
Cedan Norbu continues, "according to the national family-planning policy, Tibetan parents get 750 yuan every year for each newborn baby who is entitled for welfare till the age of 18."
"Senior Tibetans above 60 years old are all eligible for the national pension policy which was unveiled this year with 50 yuan per year,"Cedan Norbu added, "at the same time, local seniors are also encouraged for endowment insurance, for which we will enjoy another share of pension after consecutive 15 years of deposit. Seven people in our family have taken the endowment insurance."
He also told that Tibetan villagers are also enjoying cooperative medical service with maximum reimbursement of 8,000 yuan per year for each person who only need to pay 20 yuan every year.
Cedan Norbu pointed at a refrigerator he just bought and said he had saved 400 yuan from the original price 1,500 yuan thanks to the "Home Appliance Going Rural" policy.
Local officials said that similar subsidy policies are being carried out in all villages and counties across the region.
