Dilemma for US in its Taiwan Policy

Some Americans have argued that America's relationship to Beijing  is too valuable to jeopardize for Taiwan's sake. But America also benefits from its ties to Taiwan.

Against this comes what is described as a realist view of U.S.-Taiwan ties. Charles Glaser, a professor at the George Washington University in Washington, expresses this outlook most clearly when he suggests that if the U.S. were to sever its ties to Taiwan, the mainland would no longer feel compelled to contemplate a cross-Strait conflict and the way would be clear for America to pursue closer ties to Beijing.

But this assumes that Taiwan is the only potential irritant in relations between China and America and that other policy differences—over trade, U.S. forward military deployment, the status of North Korea, Tibet, and a host of others—all stem from a relationship poisoned by disagreements over Taiwan. The notion that China would become more pliant to U.S. concerns and demands or that war would be less likely should we step aside and allow the mainland to "annex" Taiwan does not hold water.

Taiwan's strategic geographic position is an essential link in the first island chain of defense and provides Japan and to a lesser extent Korea important security guarantees. The loss of Taiwan would result in a recalibration of Japan and Korea's security posture including the possibility of Japan developing nuclear weapons. It would also open the western Pacific to Beijing's increasingly robust blue-water navy whose global role China still has yet to explain.

A more realistic view would be that America's interests are best protected by encouraging peaceful cross-Strait ties, and that peaceful relations between Beijing and Taipei are most attainable when both sides come to the table from relatively strong positions. This can allow the people of Taiwan to embrace economic cooperation without the fear that political absorption would be an inevitable result, while also discouraging policy makers on the mainland from growing too assertive.

The lack of ambition in Washington for its bilateral relationship with Taiwan is deeply troubling. Beijing understands all too well the opportunity of this moment, and it is pressing hard in the face of a passive America. For the sake of the people of Taiwan, and to protect American interests in Asia, American can only hope that the Obama administration begins to grasp how emboldened Beijing is becoming with regards to Taiwan.
Another Bullplop?

Taiwan an essential link to Japan's defence?? Since when has Japan been invaded?? The very TRUTH is that Japan has been the INVADER.
Don't be brainwashed by reading japanese history books. They can be found in libraries under the heading of "FICTIONS".

Sacrificial Watch Dog?

Who is Japan to prevent China's Navy from accessing the Pacific via the island chains?  Yes indeed, who is Japan, that war criminal whose blue water navy crossed the seas and oceans to deliver war upon East Asians , Pacific Islanders, Australians, and Americans?  And who have yet to atone fully to the CHinese for their barbaric atrocities?  Should this mad dog which is chained by Washington be allowed to be tethered to the post of the East Asia Sea island chains, to prevent China's Navy freedom of navigation into the Pacific?  What nonsense and unfriendly act is this?  Logically, this will only create a situation where the Chinese will start making counter moves against Japan;  Unless japan comes to its senses and understand its interest lies with China and countries of East Asia and not the Emperor across the Pacific ocean!

Both "gon and fairdinkum" have said their fair shares of thoughts, well done!  What are all these fairy tales again?

1.
Japan was a yellow raping gangster and butchering beast of Asia. It still feels that it deserves to be respected but only by its atomic bomber with NO substance as a normal human yet because they are still mentally behaving as and like a bunch of bloody butchers.
2.
Taiwan has and is always a part of China irrespective of how any foreign party views, sees and feels about it. It has nothing at all to do with the USA, Japan or Korea or whichever except the one and only China. All others must leave that province of China alone and go home, unconditionally. By the way, this is being very civilize and kind to have waited for so long to signal YOU folks to go home, happily and peacefully!
3.
If Japan wants a nuke, so be it and USA will provide a much bigger one to it out of its compassion for Japan after bombing it. There is nothing to hide behind the bush any longer that the USA Military Regime has long ago provided Japan with nukes in their joint disguise as warship docking on Japanese soil/water exercises in their Secret Pact. So, what's hell?
4.
China had been and is lucky enough to have its own nuke weapons as powerful deterrent objectives and defences against big ROGUE nations and their lackeys in Asia. This also paves the way for a fairer share of international waters to roam in similar fashion to the USA, Russia and NATO. So, what is the scare and worry about an up-and-coming Chinese Blue Navy, even if it calls upon the Thames?
5.
China has NEVER ever invaded any party in this world even when Eunuch General ZhengHe could sail the world then with complete ease ?
China has just to move along solidly and steadfastly in abreast of time and world events. Best wishes!
