A senior Chinese leader on Thursday called for better restoration and protection of cultural heritage in northwest Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region because it can help promote social cohesion in the multiethnic region.

Zhou Yongkang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks while visiting an exhibition in Beijing that featured the progress of protecting ancient books and documents of Xinjiang.

The exhibition presented 320 items of ancient books and cultural relics that date back more than 2,000 years.

Zhou said the exhibition is an evident proof that Xinjiang had always been part of the Chinese territory and home to diverse cultures.

Over the past 2,000 years, the central administrations of China had been governing and developing the region, and Xinjiang had kept close ties with other parts of China in terms of political, economic, cultural and other aspects, Zhou added.

He said the work to protect cultural heritage and relics such as the exhibition should play an educational role in promoting the awareness of Xinjiang people being part of Chinese nation, as well as harmonious relations among ethnic groups in the region.
