BEIJING, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Zhou Yongkang has urged for more innovative measures in social management to ensure coordinated efforts to solve social problems at the grassroots level.

"Strengthening and innovating social management is an urgent task to ensure social harmony and stability, and it is also a strategic mission for maintaining the country's long-term stability and people's livelihoods," Zhou, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said Friday at a meeting on social management.

During the meeting, a decision was announced to change the name of the former Central Committee for Comprehensive Management of Public Security to the Central Committee for Comprehensive Social Management, with a new work plan that emphasizes coordinating and guiding the work of social management.

As Zhou instructed, the new committee will focus on major issues such as how to improve the leadership of Party committees and the work of the government while mobilizing the public to participate in the country's social management work.

Zhou told the committee to figure out ways to solve social problems at the grassroots level and keep a smooth channel to receive people's complaints.

In addition, Zhou urged the committee to make special efforts to set up a social management system that covers all the population, improve services and management of non-public organizations and strengthen prevention and control measures for crimes.
