How to setup OpenNI and Kinect in Windows XP?

After searching through the openni-dev google groups , I came across Vangos Pterneas’s how to setup openni-kinect page. But sadly, that didn’t work for me. I followed exactly as he mentions in that page. My computer had Windows XP 64bit. So, my initial reaction was to install everything 64 bit. It seems now that was a mistake. After installing and reinstalling multiple times, I decided to install 32-bit version of everything and proceeded as follows:

  1. Disconnected Kinect from the computer and removed all traces of previous OpenNI components and drivers that I might have installed during experimentation.
  2. Downloaded the SensorKinectMod by avin2
  3. Installed Platform/Win32/Driver/dpinst-amd64.exe. You might want to select dpinst-x86.exe if you have 32-bit machine at this step.
  4. Downloaded and installed the latest unstable 32-bit development version of OpenNI installer.
  5. Downloaded the latest unstable 32-bit development version of OpenNI Compliant Middleware Binaries.
  6. As the last step, instead of theOpenNI Compliant Hardware Binaries , I installed Windows installer from SensorKinectMod from Step 1. The installer is located in Bin/ folder.

After going through these steps, I connected Kinect back and voila, it found drivers for Kinect Motor, Kinect Audio and Kinect Camera. These devices were grouped under PrimeSense in the device manager.
