U.S. vice president leaves Beijing for Chengdu

BEIJING, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Vice President of the United States Joseph Biden left Beijing for southwestern Sichuan Province Saturday afternoon.

During Biden's stay in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan, Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping will accompany him to visit Qingchengshan high school in Dujiangyan, which was rebuilt after the 2008 earthquake.

They will also visit the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, the world's oldest functioning irrigation project, dating from 256 B.C., which was listed as a World Heritage site in 2000.

While in Chengdu, Biden will deliver a speech on U.S.-China relations at Sichuan University.

Biden arrived in Beijing Wednesday evening for a six-day official visit to China as a guest of Xi. He will leave Chengdu for Mongolia on Monday.
