Hundreds of Vietnamese websites, mostly those of government agencies and state offices, have been attacked by hackers over the last few days, according to HVAOnline security forum.

The attacks started on June 2, targeting website addresses ending in “gov.vn.”

The hackers penetrated into the websites through security holes and left messages written in Chinese and English on the home pages.

Many of the websites were paralyzed because of distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS attack).

According to HVAOnline, the attacks on the websites with the domain name “gov.vn” are decreasing but other domain names are still being targeted by the hackers.

As of press time, a number of websites have yet to be restored.

Vietnamese security forums have warned administrators of the websites to regularly backup data, and develop ways to cope with hackers.

On an official website under the Foreign Ministry of Vietnam, hackers left a Chinese national flag on it and a piece of message both in Chinese and English saying "Nansha Islands belong to China! They did, they do and they certainly will!" At the same time the website also played Chinese national song time and time again on June 8.

Some analysts said it was caused by Chinese and Vietnamese hackers attacking each other on Internet due to the bebates on South China Sea issue.

Border disputes between Vietnam and China are now stained with cyber war between hackers of both countries.

The computer hackers attacking each other to hundreds of sites, including government-owned Internet pages.

Chinese hackers reported have been containing China's flag image on the site owned by Vietnam and Vietnamese hackers responded by attach picture of armed men in a number of China's sites.

During this time the relationship between Vietnam and China could be called an awkward and public actions of these two countries is an act that rarely happens.

Mass action of Vietnamese and Chinese are driven by the ownership islands disputes in the South China Sea.

Last weekend, hundreds of Vietnamese protested China's navy which is patrolling in the South China Sea.

Despite Chinese national flag and national song appeared in Vietnamese websites by hacking and some Chinese websites got hacked too, both Vietnamese and Chinese governments would not believe the "cyber war" was based on the permissions of governments, because they are no good for both countries and can only overshadow diplomacy!
