Australians are sick of the decade- long war on terrorism and two-thirds of respondents believe it will never end, a latest study revealed on Friday.
The study was conducted by the U.S. Studies Center at Australia 's University of Sydney, and involved online polling of the views of 2210 Australians and 900 Americans between May 2 and May 18.
The study was published on Friday, challenging Australia's involvement in Afghanistan just days after the deaths of three more Australian soldiers in the war.
It found a significant number of respondents do not think the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have been worth the cost or are helping the battle against terrorism.
According to the U.S. Studies Center's chief executive, Professor Geoffrey Garrett, responses gathered after the death of terrorism mastermind Osama bin Laden showed most Australians polled (63 percent) think the war on terrorism will never end, with only 30 percent of Americans and 20 percent of Australians confident it is being won by the Coalition Force.
"Both Australians and Americans are clearly sick and tired after the 9/11 decade of war," he said in a statement released on Friday.
"They doubt the prohibitive costs have been well spent and don' t think the West is winning. People have moved on from the 9/11 decade to focus on their economic anxieties after the global financial crisis."
Australia has lost 26 soldiers in Afghanistan since 2001, but both sides of politics said the military involvement must continue.
However, the survey indicated the global financial crisis has prompted a change in priorities with people now far more worried about cost of living pressures than fear of terrorism.
Only four percent of Australian and three percent of American respondents selected terrorism as the most important problem facing their respective countries.
Thirty-two percent of Australians rated the economy as the number one concern, followed by 22 percent selecting immigration.
On the same question, Americans weighed in at 38 percent for the economy, 16 percent for health care and 14 percent for security.
