Philippine President Benigno Aquino III detonated in Tarlac province on Saturday the last batch of World War II ordnance restored in Caballo Island in Cavite province.

Aquino said the safe disposal of the World War II leftover was very important to ensure public safety.

The vintage ordnance was originally stored in Caballo Island in Cavite and experts said a detonation could trigger a domino-effect type of explosion that could be very destructive within 32- kilometer radius.

Aquino specifically detonated the last two pallets of 287-pound Mk 6 depth charges and two pallets of 190-pound Mk 9 depth charges using radio firing device. He led the last phase of the exercise triggering the explosion of 2,000 pound explosive composed of antisubmarine explosives.

The president commended the Armed Forces and all the personnel involved in the activity for safely disposing of the ordnances, completing the job way ahead of schedule.

The target date for completion was March 26, but they managed to complete it on March 5.

The exercise is the last phase of the ordnance disposal that started Feb. 9 in Crow Valley in Tarlac where more than 4,000 pieces of World War II ordnances were detonated.

Two drivers were killed and their buses were burned when armed men attacked them early Saturday in central Philippines, police said.

Police spokesman Senior Superintendent Agrimero Cruz Jr. said that around seven armed men burned the two passenger buses owned by Silver Star Bus Company in Talahid village, Almeria town, in Biliran province at around 1:00 a.m.

"The cost of damage was estimated at 14 million pesos (322,580 U.S. dollars)," he said.

Biliran police arrested two of the suspects as investigation continues, he said.

Initial investigation showed that the drivers were sleeping inside the buses parked just outside the house of its caretaker, when the armed men attacked the buses. They killed the drivers and torched the buses.
