Spanish Foreign Minister Trinidad Jimenez on Monday underlined that the military operation currently being carried out by NATO forces in Libya counts on full international legitimacy.

Speaking briefly to Spanish national television station, RTVE, on arriving in Brussels for a meeting of European Union Foreign Ministers, Jimenez insisted that, "The United Nations resolution expressly says that other kinds of resources, beyond just the imposition of a no-fly zone, can be used with the aim of protecting the civilian population (in Libya)."

Spain has sent four F-18 fighter planes to take part in the operation to impose a no-fly zone and protect the civilian population from the actions of troops under the command of Libyan leader Colonel Gadaffi.

The F-18s form part of the coalition forces based Italy and are ready to go into action, although they have not yet formed part of any combat operations.

Meanwhile the Spanish frigate "Mendez Nunez," which will also form part of the operations, will not reach the operations zone off the Libyan coast until this Thursday.

Spain's leading opposition party, The Popular Party (PP) has given its support to Spain's participation in the operation, although the leader of the left wing Izquierda Unida party, Cayo Lara has criticized Spain's involvement, likening it to the involvement in the Iraq war and saying it was provoked by the desire for oil.

Government spokesman Jose Antonio Alonso has denied this accusation.
