MOBILE phone users can check the city’s real-time traffic situation and choose the best routes during rush hours by logging 行车日志 (= logbook)onto wap.sxicity.com, which was officially launched Thursday.
The Web site is said to be China’s first traffic police service platform.
By logging onto the Web site, motorists can monitor 12 trunk roads and more than 100 intersections through more than 100 Web cameras. The system updates the traffic situation at intervals of three minutes.
“The opening of the service before the Universiade will help relieve the traffic situation and improve Shenzhen traffic police management,” Liu Fengjun, chief of Shenzhen traffic police, said at the opening ceremony.
During the Universiade, the system will also release updated traffic reports of roads around Universiade venues.
“We are trying to put half of our traffic police work online this year and 80 percent next year,” said Xu Wei, vice chief and bureau spokesman.
Mobile phone users can also ask questions and send photos of traffic violations through microblogs.
“In August, police will open more services such as renewals and reissuing drivers’ licenses, online checks of traffic violations and online payment of fines. Drivers won’t have to go to vehicle registration and management offices or traffic police units for these services,” Xu said.
Drivers who had points deducted don’t have to go to police offices for confirmation letters. They could confirm through the online service before paying the fine online, Xu said.
Shenzhen is now No. 1 among major Chinese cities for vehicle density with more than 2.1 million vehicles on the road with the number increasing 20 percent a year.
