Police forces vacated the Waygal district of Afghanistan's Nuristan province, some 180 km east of capital city of Kabul, a private television channel reported Tuesday.

Citing police sources, the Tolo television reported police forces have retreated from Waygal in the wee hours on Tuesday.

Talking to media from an undisclosed location, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed his fighters had overrun the remote district after fierce fighting began late Monday.

Mujahid also said that the fighters captured four vehicles along with 12 policemen.

Officials have yet to make comment.

More than 140,000 NATO and U.S. forces have been stationed in Afghanistan to fight Taliban-led insurgency.

The mountainous Nuristan and neighboring Kunar province have been seen as Taliban's hotbed in the eastern part of the militancy- hit country.
