In recent months the Chinese public has been shocked by multiple cases of drivers killing accident victims in hopes of evading legal responsibilities.

The most famous incident happened in October last year, when 21-year-old music student Yao Jiaxin hit a cyclist while driving in the northwestern city of Xi'an. After he noticed the cyclist was trying to memorize the license plate number of his car, Yao returned and stabbed her to death. While on trial for murder, Yao said he killed the woman, 26-year-old Zhang Miao, because she looked like a peasant and he feared she would hound him for compensation. Last month the Intermediate People's Court of Xi'an sentenced Yao to death.

After Yao's case received national attention, more cases have come to light.

This driver from Fuzhou was arrested after allegedly knocking down a six-year-old girl on Saturday and then alighting to take a look at her, before returning behind the wheel to reverse his car over the child. The victim died

On Saturday, a driver from Fuzhou, capital of southern Fujian province, allegedly did the same when he reversed his car to run over a girl he had knocked down earlier.

The man, said to be in his 50s, got down to take a look before he got back behind the wheel and drove over the girl again, eyewitnesses told the local media.

In December a truck driver who collided with a beggar in the southwestern city of Chongqing ran over her repeatedly in an attempt to avoid legal trouble. The driver, 21-year-old Tian Houbo, said he thought no one would notice the death of a beggar. And on Saturday, a driver in the southeastern city of Fuzhou who collided with a six-year-old girl ran over her a second time, according to reports. She was later pronounced dead.

It is alleged that Tian Houbo was involved in an accident in which the woman was injured, then drove later to run her over, killing her.

On April 11, a woman's body was found in a ditch near the highway at Maguan Town in Chongqing.

Police established that the woman had been dead for more than two months. Her face was damaged and her left thighbone crushed.

During investigation, police found three drivers who were traveling in the truck at the time of the accident, Tian and two other men, surnamed Wang and Xiao. Police summoned Wang, who said they hit a woman on the night of December 23.

The woman was not badly hurt as they could hear her moaning, said Wang. Local residents also said they heard a woman crying and moaning and men talking on that night.

The accident spot was about 20 meters away from the ditch where the body was found.

String of cases where drivers try to kill their victims after hitting them tries to tell a fact that murderers believe killing is more effective to solve the problem than hurting. China is a massive country, and it's unlikely this handful of cases represent any sort of large-scale trend. But they have prompted national concern about the state of morality and values in China.
