Rescue workers recovered the remains of the last three workers early Sunday from a coal mine hit by a gas explosion last week, Labor Secretary Javier Lozano said.

The retrieval took place at 1:35 a.m. on Sunday, Lozano said in his Twitter account.

The May 3 explosion killed 14 miners and seriously injured a 14-year-old worker, who lost both his arms.

The accident once again raised questions about work safety in a region dotted with coal mines known as the Carbonifera, located in Coahuila state, about 135 km south of the border with Texas.

The region has witnessed a number of mine accidents, including the Pasta de Conchos mine explosion in 2006 that killed 65 workers.

Local authorities said the mine, owned by Beneficios Internacionales del Norte (Binsa), exploded after methane gas accumulated underground. The victimized miners were trapped at a depth of 60 meters.

A Binsa spokesman told Radio Formula in Mexico City that not all the workers were registered with Mexico's social security system.
