The first group of 360 Thai workers, on a chartered flight, returned home from Libya early Saturday, while some 700 Thais are scheduled to arrive later in the day.

The first evacuated group was escorted by Chavanond Intarakomalayasut, secretary to foreign affairs minister, who arrived at Suvarnabhumi International Airport at 7:05 a.m. Saturday.

Chavanond said the workers were evacuated from capital Tripoli and Benghazi and then traveled to Tunisia before boarding Thai Airways International's (THAI) chartered plane back to Thailand.

Under the evacuation plan, three chartered flights will carry about 700 Thai workers home daily as there are approximately 4,000 workers wishing to return home from Libya, Chavanond said.

It is expected that the plan could be completed before March 13.

The secretary to foreign affairs minister said about 8,000 Thai workers are now still living in Libyan towns in which not much violence has been reported and their returning home would depend on their job placement firms or the Labor Ministry.

Approximately 2,016 Thai workers have already returned to Thailand so far, while over 23,000 Thais have been working and living in the unrest-stricken Libya.
